The Electric Field The electric field E at a point in space is defined as the electric force F, acting on a positive test charge q 0, placed at that point divided by the magnitude of the charge. Ø The existence of an electric field is a property of its source Ø Every charge comes with its own electric field. Electric field lines Ø Ø These are a way of visualizing the electric field. The electric field vector E is tangential to the electric field line at any point. The magnitude of the electric field vector E is proportional to the density of the lines. Electric field lines can never cross. Ø For a positive point charge, the lines are directed radialy outward. Ø For a negative point charge, the lines are directed radialy inward. Ø An electric dipole has two nearby point charges of equal magnitude q and opposite sign, separated by a distance d.
