Getting Started with FEC • Sept 2006, Kicked off the Process – Visit from Jeff Eagan & Jane Powers, DOE-HQ – Identified the enthusiastic parties & good practices already in place • Established Electronics Stewardship Team – P 2, EPP, IT, Property Management • Dec 2006, Got management approval to participate • Jan 2007, Registered as an FEC Partner – Submitted baseline report, goals, annual report, and Bronze award application

FEC Achievements at INL • Awards: – 2007 & 2008 FEC Bronze Award – 2009 FEC Silver Award – First place in the 2007 & 2008 Electronics Reuse & Recycle Campaign (ERRC), Large Western Civilian division

Going for Silver • FEC Silver was identified as a Performance goal • Incorporated electronics stewardship into EMS • Purchasing: – Purchasing >95% EPEAT electronics • All desktops, laptops & monitors on blanket purchase order are EPEAT Certified (Silver or better) – Energy Star is the standard for all other electronics purchased under a contract

Going for Silver • Operating & Maintenance: – Prepared a power management policy & procedure • Outlines CPM settings for non-exempt machines & guidance for exempt machines • Directs employees to power down computers & peripherals on nights and weekends – Use centralized system to install, upgrade & repair Software

Going for Silver • End-of-Life: – All hard drives are sanitized – No computers sent to landfills (Internal reuse, donating computers to schools & non-profits, public auction) – Info sheet on environmentally friendly dispositioning distributed with donated equipment

Beyond FEC & Desktops… • Server Virtualization (reduction of 200 servers) • Thin Client Computing • High Performance Computer Center (Data Center)

Beyond FEC & Desktops… • Cell Phone stipend program – Provides a stipend for employees using a personal cell phone for work in order to move away from government owned cell phones – Current participation is 550 employees (35% participation) – GOAL: 93% participation at end of 2010

Next Steps • Increase percentage of computers with power management enabled • Continue education campaign for employees: – Duplex printing/copying, Power-down computers – Promote FEC Partnership
