Why a BAS on Maui? THE MAUI NEWS Yesterday $3 Billion in 2007 • Educational programs in Hawaii still leave the state short of technically trained workers in the mechanical, industrial and electrical engineering fields that will be needed, with an estimate that even if every student graduating from a Hawaii engineering program stays home, Hawaii will need to recruit 60 to 70 engineering graduates every year to meet its technical work force needs. • "The science and technology sector provides and creates living-wage jobs, has helped to reverse the 'brain drain' and bring our kamaaina home to good jobs, reinvests in our economy and contributes to the overall health of our economy as an alternative to our service sector and tourism. "

Why a BAS on Maui? we need to continue our current investment in this important $3 billion industry. Agencies such as the Maui Economic Development Board have been promoting educational programs for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), starting in grade schools with a longrange goal of providing a trained and stable work force for industries that might come to Hawaii, or developing entrepreneurs who would create their own technology-based businesses. "We've invested in the work force, collaborating in the (kindergarten) through 12 pipeline and also with the colleges, with the University of Hawaii system and at the community colleges, to make sure the curriculum is aligned and does prepare our Hawaii students to take these jobs. "

Innovation and Technology in Hawaii : An Economic and Workforce Profile Private sector tech companies’ employment grew at a rate 32 percent faster than the rest of the state. Much like Tucson, Arizona, where optics is an important economic driver, The industry not only brings in numerous visitors and researchers to the island, but also creates a substantial number of high-paying, highly skilled jobs. In 2007, companies in astronomy offered workers the highest average earnings, of any commercial market segment. This was 58 percent higher than the average earnings for all tech-related jobs. Most of their employees are not astronomers, but engineers and technicians who monitor the equipment used in the observatories. Ten of the largest occupations in the technology sector are related to programming, managing, and supporting computer software and hardware. Hawaii and Maui Counties each accounted for about 1, 900 technology related jobs and Kauai had another 1, 000 jobs in technology industries in 2007. Even though public investments are relatively smaller on the Neighbor Islands, they still represent the nucleus around which technology activities are occurring there.

Partners - Researching existing engineering tech bachelor's programs: we have been researching the range

Partners - Researching existing engineering tech bachelor's programs: we have been researching the range of programs that exist across the country, including BAS programs. We are very hopeful that funding will be available to continue this work, and look forward to helping to shape the program based on the experiences of related programs. - Workforce Skills Study: We are in the process of writing the final report of our study of local workforce skills, which utilized five years of internships in Maui high tech - Lab modules: We have developed many lab modules for MCC courses, and have a range of lab modules used in other contexts that we can implement at MCC. - Curriculum development and planning for MCC's applied engineering tech BAS: We have been significantly involved in development and planning, and are very hopeful that funding will be available to continue through the full development of the program. - UH partnership in the Institute for Scientist and Engineer Educators (ISEE): ISEE is a cutting edge program that has not been implemented anywhere else in the country. UH, and MCC specifically, will become a major partner in ISEE if our Akamai NSF grant is funded. And, again, we are very hopeful.

Partners MEDB began working with Mark Hoffman in 2001, shortly after making building a resident-trained technology workforce our organization's priority focus. MEDB's industry-led membership has expressed that a resident trained workforce is key to growth in the sector. -Engineering is a top identified competency by Maui employers -Access to aligned engineering degree programs is a key component -Many Maui 2 -yr degree students are looking to continue technical education/while employed/with employer support/without having to leave Maui -Building science & tech critical mass on Maui is dependent on 4 -yr degree offerings

Partners As the If. A/Maui director I can say that we are strongly supportive of MCC efforts to plan for an Applied Engineering Technology program. If called for (and to the extent If. A's resources allow) we will provide technical/teaching workspace and teaching resources. This is an important program which the people of Maui county and the State of Hawaii need and deserve. Planning should begin in earnest as soon as practically possible.

Partners On behalf of the Hawaii Community College Electronics Technology Program, we wish to express our support in the planning of the Applied Engineering Technology Program proposed my counterpart Mr. Mark Hoffman. As the world economy continues to evolve, businesses and industries in the State of Hawaii must adopt new practices and processes in order to survive. The infusion of technology is transforming the way people work and do business. The UH Community Colleges programs must adopt these practices in order to provide graduates who can enter and advance in the high tech, challenging world of work. Mark has constantly worked to increase the number and preparedness of electronics technology technicians by developing, implementing, evaluating, and disseminating a costeffective model for educating the high demand, high skill electronics technology specialist not only for the Island of Hawaii but for all the sister campuses of the UH CC system. As a long time counterpart of Mark, it is with great optimism that support be extended to advance the goals and objectives outlined in Mark’s proposal to significantly help the State of Hawaii effectively respond to Hawaii’s high-tech industry demands.
