Electron Configuration, Aufbau Diagram, Abbreviated Configurations, Ions
• Objective – Today I will be able to: • Calculate the electron configuration for elements and ions on the periodic table • Evaluation/ Assessment – Informal assessment – student responses when reviewing electron configuration problems. – Formal Assessment – collecting and analyzing responses to electron configuration worksheets and the exit ticket
Lesson Sequence • Warm – Up • Explain: electron configurations using 3 d orbitals. • Elaborate: Students will complete 19 -36 on electron configuration WS with a partner • Evaluate: review the questions as a class (informal assessment) • Explain: abbreviated electron configurations • Electron Configuration Practice • Exit Ticket
Warm - Up • How many electrons can each orbital hold? – s= – p= – d= – f= • Write the electron configuration for the following elements – Helium – Nitrogen – Silicon
Objective • Today I will be able to: – Calculate the electron configuration for elements on the periodic table
Homework • Electron Configuration Practice
Agenda • • • Warm – Up Study Guide Electron Configuration Notes Electron Configuration Stations Electron Configuration Practice Exit Ticket
Electrons Exam Study Guide Sheet Fill in the boxes that Ms. Ose tells you to for the Electrons study guide
Electron Configuration
Why does 4 s come before 3 d? • 3 d is of slightly higher energy than 4 s, but 4 s is further from the nucleus • It takes less energy for a 3 d electron to form pairs then a 4 s electron
Aufbau Diagram • Instead of using the periodic table as a road map, you can use the aufbau diagram to determine the order that the electrons occupy the different energy levels • Electrons fill the lowest energy orbitals first

Complete Electron Configuration Practice Worksheet 19 - 36
Electron Configuration Stations Work in pairs. Complete the right side of calculations first. Then complete the left. When you finish work on more electron configuration practice
Abreviated Electron Configuration • Scientists are lazy ; ) • We need a shorthand way to represent electron configuration • It would take a long time to write the configuration for elements with a lot of electrons • How do we do this? • Noble Gas Configuration
Noble Gas Configuration • The last column on the periodic table is referred to as the noble gases • To write in abbreviated configuration: – Find the last noble gas within the configuration – Write the symbol – Write the remaining configuration • Example • Ca - 1 s 2 2 p 6 3 s 2 3 p 6 4 s 2 • Noble Gas Configuration = [Ar] 4 s 2
Noble Gas Configuration • Writing Noble Gas Configurations for ions is a little bit different • Must account for an electron being gained or lost – Chlorine Ion = Cl-1 • [Ne] 3 s 2 3 p 6 – Sodium Ion = Na+1 • [He] 2 s 2 2 p 6
Electron Configuration Practice Complete the practice. If you have questions, ask Ms. Ose for help
To the back of the worksheet add the following problems: • Write the electron configuration for the following ions: – Mg 2+ – N 3– Ag+
Exit Ticket • What is wrong with the following configurations? – Al – 1 s 22 p 63 s 3 – Ti – 1 s 22 p 63 s 22 p 64 s 24 d 2 • Revisit the Blue Electron Exam Study Guide and Complete the boxes covered in class today
