• Where are the Electrons • • • Electrons are located in orbitals outside of the nucleus The orbital is the area of most probable location 2 electrons are the maximum that are allowed per orbital
• What is an Energy Level? • • This is the area occupied by all of the electrons in one particular area of the atom Designated with the letters S, P, D, F 7 Principle energy levels exist The period number of the element designates the highest energy level where electrons are located S is the lowest energy level and F is the highest All elements have an S, but not all have an F Electrons can jump from level to level when they gain energy
• What are Valence Electrons and What do they Do? • • • Electrons that are located in the farthest or outermost shell Have the most energy because they are farthest away from the nuclear attraction They can be exchanged or shared between atoms If an atom gains these it has a negative charge If it loses them it will have a positive charge
• How does the Ground State Differ From the Excited State? • • • Ground state is the lowest energy level state that an electron can be found in This is the “normal” orbital area for an electron Excited state is the level that an electron can jump to when it gains energy
• What happens to atoms when electrons “jump”? • • • Electrons gain energy and move from ground state to excited state The jump is proportional to the amount of energy that is gained Electrons do this and we cannot see it When electrons return to the ground state, they release the energy and we see it as a color spectrum Each element has a unique color spectrum that can be used to identify it based upon this catch and release of energy
• What Happens continued • • • Electrons can gain and lose energy in cycles This is the idea behind neon lights and other colored light effects At times we can see this as visible light Think fireworks, or neon signs This spectra that is produced is called a bright line spectra/spectrum
