Need for electron beam seeding 1 RUN 1 scheme • The phase of ionization laser is set to the middle of proton bunch. • Only back half of the proton bunch interact with plasma at the selfmodulator • At the accelerator, front half of the proton bunch can suffer from selfmodulation instability with uncontrolled phase of wakefield. Need for electron beam seeding 2 RUN 2 scheme • The phase of ionization laser is ahead of the proton bunch. • The entire proton bunch particles interact with plasma. • The phase of selfmodulated proton bunch is determined only at the self-modulator. Electron bunch seeded proton bunch modulation • The transverse wakefield driven by the preceding electron bunch modulates the proton bunch. • Now the seed wakefield for the proton bunch modulation is decoupled from the proton bunch.
