Electrical Circuits Objective: What is a simple circuit? How does electricity flow through a simple circuit to produce heat, light, and sound?

1. What is a closed circuit? An electrical circuit allows the movement of electrical energy.

1. What is an open circuit? This is an electrical circuit that prevents the movement of electrical energy.

2. Basic Parts of Circuit

Basic parts of a circuit: Load (Receiver) (light bulb) Wires Power Source (battery) Switch

LOAD (Receiver): The part of the circuit that changes electrical energy into another form of Example: electrical energy is transformed by the load of the light bulb to light and thermal energy when the light is turned on.

3. Series Circuit

Series Circuit: A circuit that allows only one path for the flow of electricity.

Series Circuit: This type of circuit will not work if one or more light bulbs go out.

Refrigerator Example: If your refrigerator was wired by a series circuit and one light bulb burned out, the whole refrigerator would stop working.

4. Parallel Circuits

Parallel Circuit This is a circuit that allow electric current to flow along more than one path.
