Essential Question: • What are the different kinds of electric charge?
Electric Charge • An electric property of matter that creates electric and magnetic forces. An unbalance of protons and electrons. • Protons: Positive • Electrons: Negative • Neutrons: No Charge
Electric Charge • Positive and negative charges are said to be opposites. • Opposite charges attract each other, and like charges repel each other. • Electric Charges can not be created or destroyed only moved around. • Negatively charged objects have more electrons then protons, and vice versa.
Electric Charge • Transfer of electric charge. • Protons are fixed inside the nucleus, so only the electrons can move to create a charge. • Charges can move within uncharged objects. • A neutral conductor can redistribute the charge without becoming charged (induced Charge). Basically, all the electrons move to one side of the object.
Balloon lab • Open the bag of paper pieces and place them on the table. • Rub Mr. Millsap’s nasty hiking sock on the balloon. • Bring the balloon with the side you just rubbed toward the pieces of paper and observe. • Repeat a few times. • Take the second balloon with the string attached and hang it over the edge of the desk. • Rub it with the sock. • Take the original balloon and rub it with the sock, and then bring it close to the balloon that is hanging and observe. • Repeat a few times.
