Electric Charge Electric Charge: an electrical property of matter that creates electric and magnetic

Electric Charge Electric Charge: an electrical property of matter that creates electric and magnetic forces and interactions. An object can have a negative charge, a positive charge, or no charge at all.

Big Idea “Write this down somewhere” Electrons are the Negatively charged part of an atom. Protons are the Positively charged part of an atom Neutrons are the Neutrally charge part of an atom

Electric Charges Like charges repel. Opposite charges attract. Electrical charges depend on an imbalance

Electric Charges Like charges repel. Opposite charges attract. Electrical charges depend on an imbalance of protons and electrons. Negatively charged objects have more electrons than protons. Positively charged objects have fewer electrons than protons.

Transfer of Electric Charge Conductors allow charges to flow; insulators do not. Materials such

Transfer of Electric Charge Conductors allow charges to flow; insulators do not. Materials such as the copper in cords are called electrical conductors. Allow charges to move freely. Materials that do not transfer charge easily are called electrical insulators. Ex: cardboard, glass, silk, plastic. Charges in electrical cords attached to an appliance can move through the conducting center but cannot escape through the surrounding insulator.

Transfer of Electric Charges can move within uncharged objects. The charges in a neutral

Transfer of Electric Charges can move within uncharged objects. The charges in a neutral conductor can be redistributed without changing the overall charge of the object.

Transfer of Electric Charge Objects can be charged by contact. This is called Conduction!!!-

Transfer of Electric Charge Objects can be charged by friction. Have you ever pulled

Transfer of Electric Charge Objects can be charged by friction. Have you ever pulled clothes out of the dryer and had them stick together? They stick together because of static electricity. Your clothes are charged by friction as they rub against each other inside the dryer, and the electric charge builds up on the clothes.

Electric Force Electric Force: the force of attraction or repulsion on a charged particle

Electric Force Electric Force: the force of attraction or repulsion on a charged particle that is due to an electric field. Depends on charge on distance. Electric force acts through a field. Electric field: the space around a charged object in which another charged object experiences an electric force.

Electric Field Lines Electric field lines point in the direction of the electric force

Electric Field Lines Electric field lines point in the direction of the electric force on a positive charge. Electric field lines around a positive charge point outward. Electric field lines around a negative charge point inward.

Electric Field Lines Electric field lines never cross one another.
