Another type of plant that is often found on this beach is coral in which tiny red organisms living in them. This is partly what makes the sand pink in some areas. The average temperature of Elafonissi beach is about 65 degrees F. Elafonissi Beach is in the temperate climate zone. Elafonissi Beach is located in the chaparral biome. Elafonissi Beach has white sand with many pink spots from crushed seashells that are ground into the sand from years of erosion. Coral with tiny red living organisms also make the sand pink. On Elafonissi Beach, there is a memorial to over 600 women and children that were killed in the fury of Turks when hiding in the island in 1824! Elafonissi deos not have much fauna, but Elafonissi is known for it's Caretta Turtles. Elafonissi also has an interesting history. In Greek, Elafonissi means" Island of Deer". This name came from the population of Red Deer. Long ago, some people worshiped what was believed to be the Goddess of Hunting. Her name was Artemis.
