Why is it irregular? Tener is irregular because it is a stem-changing verb AND it has an irregular yo form! What is a stem-changing verb? A stem-changing verb has a spelling change in the stem!
What is the stem of a verb? The stem of a verb is the verb minus the –ar, -er, or –ir ending. EX: tener ten = stem -er = ending
Stem-changing verbs are verbs that have a change in how the stem is spelled when they are conjugated. They are also referred to as boot verbs (Because the forms inside the boot change, and the ones outside the boot do NOT stem-change)!
How do we conjugate tener?
First, we need to find the verb stem. To do this, we drop the –ar, -er, or –ir off of the infinitive. ten er Next, we will change the e to ie in the verb stem. Then, we add our regular endings for present tense.
Why are these verbs also called boot verbs? yo tú nosotros/as If we drew a boot around our verb chart, all of the forms within the boot are stemchanging. All of the forms that are NOT in the boot (nosotros) are normal. él ellos ellas ustedes
