The Preterite There are 2 different sets of conjugations in the preterite: the “AR” conjugation and the “ER/IR” conjugation. Just like all tenses, some verbs are irregular in the preterite, which means they won’t follow these conjugations.
AR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE -é -amos -asteis -ó -aron
ER/IR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE -í -imos -isteis -ió -ieron
Practice Put the following verbs in the preterite. 1. Beber (Tú) Bebiste 2. Caminar (Ellos) Caminaron 3. Escuchar (Yo) Escuché 4. Escribir (Ud. ) Escribió 5. Llamar (Nosotros) Llamamos 6. Entender (Uds. ) Entendieron
-CAR VERBS Verbs that end in –car will have a different conjugation in the “YO” form. WHY? Conjugate “Tocar” in the preterite Tocé Tocamos Tocaste Tocó Tocaron Because it comes before “e”, the “C” makes the “s” sound here, when it should make the “k” sound like the rest of the c’s in the conjugation.
-CAR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE -qué -amos -asteis -ó -aron Remove the “C”
-GAR VERBS Verbs that end in –gar will have a different conjugation in the “YO” form. WHY? Conjugate “Jugar” in the preterite Jugé Jugamos Jugaste Jugó Jugaron Because it comes before “e”, the “G” makes the “h” sound here, when it should make the “G” sound like the rest of the g’s in the conjugation.
-GAR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE -gué -amos -asteis -ó -aron
-ZAR VERBS Verbs that end in –zar will have a different conjugation in the “YO” form. WHY? Conjugate “Empezar” in the preterite Empezé Empezaste Empezó Empezamos Empezaron The “Z” in front of an “e” will make a “th” sound in Spain. Because of that, it does not go with the rest of the conjugations.
