EINHARD’S CHARLEMANGE By Max Shelbourne
Subject Charlemagne, King of the Franks and Emperor of the Romans He is ruthless and yet not as spoiled and aloof as one would expect someone of his stature to be. He is very powerful being emperor of Rome. The writer believed that Charlemagne was an amazing king and a great that would not be equaled for a long time.
Why The author is giving this account because he believes that no one can describe Charlemagne's life more accurately than he can.
Form Biography Told in chronological order
Audience The World Public
Motivation Einhard felt that Charlemagne’s life was too wonderful to go unheard and he believed he was the only one who had the adequate knowledge to write the biography.
Selection Things that portrayed Charlemagne as a bad person would have been left out. Kept in were things that make him out as a saint.
Preservation Einhard was a scribe and his account of Charlemagne's life was very well written making it ideal for a historical item that will be used to recount his life.
Bias Einhard was biased because he thought Charlemagne was a great man and would not say anything bad about him “In any event, I would rather commit my story to writing, and hand it down to posterity in partnership with others, so to speak, than to suffer the most glorious life of this most excellent king, the greatest of all the princes of his day, and his illustrious deeds, hard for men of later times to imitate, to be wrapped in the darkness of oblivion. “.
Learn From this account we can learn the ins and outs of Charlemagne's life from a person that has been there as a servant right next to him as it all happened. Everything seems very probable in this account although very biased towards Charlemagne at times.
