The National e- Safety Working Group The National e-Safety Working Group Ø This group adopts the multi-stakeholders approach with membership from Governmental Institutions, ISPs, Mobile operators, the private sector and NGOs. Ø The group aims at synergizing national efforts in the field of child online safety. Work Mechanisms of the National e-Safety working Group: Ø Exchanging information among group members about the efforts made by each member in the field of Child online Protection, and determining future steps. Ø Opening an Ongoing dialogue concerning new facts, information, news, tools or trends that can contribute to support the implementation of plans for protecting children online in Egypt. Ø Initiating studies, surveys and opinion polls to determine risks faced by children using the Internet, and determining who should be responsible for dealing with those risks, and developing general guidelines for how to address those risks. Ø Following- up all conferences and seminars held at the local and international levels in order to raise awareness about the safe use of Internet and combating Cybercrime, and contributing to those forums objectively and effectively, with a view on Egypt’s concerns and issues. About the project… 1 of 2 Basic information § Multiyear, multi phase research project. Launched by GSM Association. § Joint initiative with Mobile Society Research Institute [MSRI] of NTT Do. Co. Second phase started shortly covering countries like Japan, India, China, Mexico and ending in June 2010 § A third phase started September 2010 up to July 2011. Subsequent phases will continue over the years pending country sponsorships. § There are 4 countries in the 2011 report. 8 were surveyed in total over the last 3 years. Egypt selected one of the host countries § Proudly participated in the project through a collaborative effort between Ministry of ICT; Mobinil and expert partner NGO. § The Egyptian government is an avid supporter of ‘Child Protection’… it’s Ministry of ICT has an excellent track record that include public movements, focus groups and a wide line of publications. Project methodology 1 of 2 Approach § GSMA developed a pair of survey questions.

Project methodology 1 of 2 Approach § GSMA developed a pair of survey questions. One for parents. . another for children. § A total of 1385 questionnaire [pairs] were distributed in 4 geographic locations. Total valid responses collected were 1014 pairs. . Translating to 73. 2% success rate. § Each pair represented a parent or guardian and his oldest child. It took each parent about 35 minutes to complete the form and… 20 minutes for an average child. § Workgroup translated questionnaires back to English and entered data in coded sheets… Field survey took 6 weeks working sequentially in 4 regions. Workgroups § Three NGO were selected to perform the field survey. The choice was based on their experience in awareness, public dialogue and training activities. § Each partner NGO covered a geographic area they are most acquainted with. Zone Assuit. South Central Population Assuit City: 0. 5 Million. Assuit Governorate: 3. 1 Million. 001 -302 Sample size The capital of Assuit governorate. Southern region largest city, the pearl of Upper Egypt with 500, 000 inhabitants. Rich in culture and social diversity. Has one of largest Coptic populations in the county Zone Alexandria. North West Population 4. 4 Million. Sample size 604 -814 The second-largest city in Egypt. Situated along the Mediterranean coast, it is also the largest seaport in the country serving 80% of foreign trade. Home to Bibliotheca Alexandrina; the library of Alexandria and many other Roman and Greek cultural sites. Egypt’s Internet Safety Project City and Zone Cairo. North Central Population Estimates vary. Cairo City: 6. 9 Million. Greater metropolitan. Cairo is 17 Million. 303 -603 Sample size Cairo is the capital of Egypt, is also ranked as one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Nicknamed "The City of a Thousand Minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture, City and Zone El Arish. North East Population Arish Town: 90 K North Sinai Governorate: 240 K 815 -1014 Sample size Capital of North Sinai. Located on the Mediterranean coast of Sinai peninsula northeast of Cairo. Also the closest major town to eastern border making it an important connection for travelers to and from Gaza. Hosts the Sinai University main facilities.

Lessons learnt and feedback 1 of 2 § Length of questions. . some samples saw that questions were too long… perhaps due to asking the same question, many times in different ways. § Repetitive questions however are healthy. . It ensures having accurate answers § Nature of the questions. . The majority saw it was too personal. Were not comfortable with them; especially in light of recent events. § Multiple choice questions were great. It easier and faster to respond. Also raised level of consistency in answers. Lessons learnt and feedback 1 of 2 § Orientation. . A 15 -minute introduction about the project and questionnaire was instrumental in gaining the trust and support of the public. § Verification. . Having the workgroup ensure all questions were duly answered was key in getting as many valid responses as possible. § Completely standard questions May not be suitable to all countries. Future outlook § We believe that on-line surveys are easier, faster, accurate not to mention less resource consuming than paper surveys. § Mobile surveys is the ideal solution in developing countries; especially Africa where access to PC with internet connection is still limited. Mobile coverage however reaches almost everyone these days. § The following is a diagram of a typical m-survey application. Simple, cheap and can deployed on almost all mobile phones… no smart phone needed. § We think of this as the way to future. One of the most effective mobile applications. 1.
