Re (Amon-Re) • The Sun god • Creator god • Pharaohs were considered to be the son of Re • Folktale: Re created human beings from his tears.
Horus • Falcon-headed god • Claimed his father’s throne, but had to fight his uncle for it. • A manifestation of the sun god.
Anubis • God of the Dead • Son of Re • Folktale: Anubis presided over the weighing of the heart during the journey to the underworld.
Osiris • God of Underworld • Pharaohs become Osiris after their death. • Folktale: Osiris was often shown as a mummy, since he was supposedly killed by being closed in a coffin and sent down the Nile.
Isis • Mother Goddess • Source of Pharaoh’s power • Folktale: Isis is considered the mother of the pharaohs.
Bast • Cat Goddess • Daughter of Re, the sun god • Considered goddess of the home • Often is shown with the head of a cat.
Chons • Egyptian Moon god • Folktale: Chons was playing a game with other gods and bet some of his light. He lost, and so cannot show his light all month long.
Geb • God of the Earth • Folktale: The laughter of Geb was said to cause earthquakes.
Maat • Egyptian goddess of Truth and Justice • Folktale: Judge of the souls of the dead in the underworld.
Polytheism • Egyptians worshipped many gods. • Temples were built all over Egypt to worship the gods. These temples collected money from everyone. • The people explained natural events through the gods.
