Natural Barriers n Egypt had many “natural barriers” and as a result was easy to protect. n n Sahara Desert Med Sea Red Sea There was only a small piece of land that connected Africa to Asia. n Which is why it was difficult to invade and take over Egypt.
Egyptian Kingdoms n n Originally, Ancient Egypt was not united, it was divided between Upper Egypt (South) and Lower Egypt (North). Menes was the first person to unite the Upper and Lower Kingdoms together. n He created a Dynasty. n Family of rulers, right to rule passes on within the family from father to son, or daughter. n Later these rulers were called Pharaohs = Great House
Old Kingdom n n Built the Largest (Great) Pyramids and the Sphinx Two Class System n n Upper - Pharaohs, Priests, Government Officials Lower - Peasants and Farmers n Very bureaucratic, had a ordered society with many procedures and set rules.
Middle Kingdom n n New line of Pharaohs reunited Egypt creating a time of stability known as the “Golden Age. ” Hyksos (Foreigners) - arrived in Egypt from Asia bringing chariots and compound bows. n Either migrated to or took over parts of Egypt.
New Kingdom n n Strong Pharaohs kicked out the Hyksos. Afterwards the Pharaohs built strong armies and made Egypt into an Empire, by conquering foreign lands. n The strongest kingdom they would ever have.
