INTRODUCTION What is the arctic ice cap? • The arctic ice cap is a high latitude region of a planet that’s covered in ice.
WHY IS THE ARCTIC ICE CAP MELTING? • The arctic ice cap is melting because of global warming. Global waring is projected to impact the oceans. Ongoing effects include rising sea levels due to the melting of ice sheets, and warming of the ocean surface, leading to the temperature increasing. The melting of ice reveals darker land or ocean beneath, which absorbs more sunlight, causing the temperature to go up.
HOW DOES THE MELTING ICE CAP AFFECT THE EXTRACTION OF OIL, NATURAL GAS AND MINERALS? • More than half of the ocean was covered in ice caps. Which makes it hard for people to get oil and natural gas. When the ice caps melt, new shipping lanes open up, which makes it easier for oil companies to send their drilling ships to the north and produce more oil for people to burn. Which leads to better sources of oil, natural gas, and minerals.
HOW DOES THE MELTING ICE CAP AFFECT THE RATE OF EROSION AND WEATHERING IN COASTAL AREAS? • 65% of the coastline does directly into the Arctic ocean. The sea level increases when the ice caps melt. Climate experts Said that sea levels can rise up to 200 feet or more. Rising sea level is very likely to inundate coastal plains, accelerate beach erosion, flooding, and force salt water into bays, rivers.
HOW IS THE SUSTAINABILITY OF GEOSPHERE AFFECTED BY THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP? • The sustainability of the geosphere is affected in negative way by the melting of the arctic ice cap. A lot of waste can go into the ocean affecting local ocean animals, rocks and dirt around coastlines of the ocean will erode faster. Also, all the organism will be wiped out if there was a huge flood.
HOW COULD THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP AFFECT CLIMATE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD? • The melting arctic ice cap will increase the temperature in all parts of the world. It is because the arctic ice sheets acts as a mirror to the UV rays of the sun reflecting the heat back into the atmosphere. When the arctic ice sheets melt, all the heat from the sun will shine down on earth and not be able to reflect back to the sun.
HOW COULD THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP CONTRIBUTE TO CARBON IN THE ATMOSPHERE? • Melting of the ice caps increases the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by releasing greenhouse gases. When the global supply of oil increase, it will cause more carbon in the atmosphere.
HOW IS THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE ATMOSPHERE AFFECTED BY THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP? • If all the ice caps melt, then global seas will rise about 20 feet. If this happens, there will be a lot more ocean to suck in carbon dioxide. And, if there’s less carbon dioxide because the ocean sucks the majority of it in, then plants on land won’t be ale to live and there will be less oxygen. In the case of no oxygen because of no carbon dioxide, all living animals will die. Therefore, no more living plants means no more production of carbon dioxide, and then no more oxygen.
HOW WILL GREENLAND’S ICE SHEET BE AFFECTED BY THE ARCTIC ICE CAP MELT? • The Greenland ice sheet is a vast body covering roughly 80% of the surface of Greenland. If the ice cap melt, it would raise global sea levels by 25 feet. When ocean touches ice, the ice melts. So if the arc tic ice sheet melts, it could potentially melt all of Greenland’s ice causing a worldwide catastrophe.
WHAT AFFECTS WILL THE CHANGES TO GREENLAND’S ICE SHEET HAVE ON THE HYDROSPHERE? • Greenland’s ice sheet is 1, 710, 000 square kilometers and if that ice turns into water, there will be a ginormous spike in the water of the hydrosphere. The sustainability of the hydrosphere will be altered because the level of water will have increased.
HOW IS THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE HYDROSPHERE AFFECTED BY THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP? • With the water levels rising potentially 20 feet, many places on a coastline will be flooded out. Scientists can use the glacier from Greenland to discover information about what the earth was like thousands of years ago. So, if all the ice melt, we could possibly lose thousands of years regarding history.
HOW IS THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE BIOSPHERE AFFECTED BY MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP? • With the water levels rising due to the melting of ice cap, parts of the biosphere could be submerged causing the life in them to die off. Soon after, the biosphere could be gone because all the ecosystem rely on each other, and if some start decomposing, it will effect all the ecosystem.
HOW HAVE ANIMALS SUCH AS POLAR BEARS, WHALES, WALRUSES AND SEALS BEEN AFFECTED? • All the animals have adapted to the cold weather. They all have their way of surviving. When the ice cap melts, all the animals will have to find a new way of surviving, or else they could potentially become extinct.
HOW DOES THE MELTING ICE CAP AFFECT HUNTING AND FISHING BY ABORIGINAL PEOPLE? • Ice caps were used for aboriginal people to stand on while fishing. When the ice melts, hunting would become difficult. Then, they would have to come up with a new way of finding food. Soon, the animals on the ice cap will become extinct and the aboriginals will lose their food source.
HOW DOES THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP SHOW THAT THE EARTH’S SPHERES ARE INTERCONNECTED? • The melting ice cap shows that all the spheres are interconnected because the problem effects the whole world. The melt will increase the amount of water in the ocean. Then, the organisms in the biosphere will lose their homes and become extinct. The more water there is in the ocean, the less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which will affect the biosphere.
DO YOU THINK THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP COULD BE CONSIDERED A GLOBAL PROBLEM? WHY OR WHY NOT? I think the melting of the arctic ice cap could be considered a global problem. when the ice melt, it will cause many floods and deaths of living organisms. This is a really big problem so society needs to address this problem immediately.
