INTRODUCTION • The purpose of a manager is to achieve results through the activities of other people. When the manager succeeds, the organisation benefits directly and your effectiveness as a manager plays a vital role in achieving your personal goals. • As a manager, you can multiply the effects of your personal growth by inspiring and directing your people to undertake a program of personal development. When you lead your team members to gain new skills and to be more productive in their activities you add unlimited power to the effectiveness of your organisation.
CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE MANAGER • Leadership • In order to be an effective manager, you need to be able to lead your employees in an efficient manner. A lot of responsibility comes with being a manager, and being able to lead a team is required. • Experience • If you don’t have experience working in a professional environment and leading a team, it will be hard to step up as a manager. A great way to gain experience in a management role is to volunteer, either within your field or with a nonprofit. Ask to help manage and produce events, whether it’s raising money for an organization or organizing an event. • Communication • Being able to communicate with your team is required when being an effective manager. This not only means communicating job responsibilities and expectations, it means listening to your team and working with them to produce results within their position. • Knowledge • Experience as a manager is a must but so is knowledge. There are many different degrees offered for managers, including a bachelor’s degree in business or a master’s degree in leadership or project management. You can also get a certificate in project management, entrepreneurship, ethics, or human resource management. • Organization • If you aren’t organized in your position, there’s a good chance that the employees you manage won’t be either. There are many resources online that can inspire you to get organized. You can also buy a personal planner or download an app on your phone that can remind you of meetings, tasks you need to complete every day, etc.
ADVANTAGE OF EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT * Productive Staff When you effectively train your managers, you better position them to train their own staff members. A knowledgeable workforce that is fully aware of their own job responsibilities as well as your expectations is a high-functioning unit that provides superior service to your customers. Managers with trained staffs are more efficient in the performance of their job duties and are less likely to make costly errors that can result in decreased revenue. * Effective Motivators A well-trained manager is confident in his role and has the ability to motivate staffers to perform to the best of their abilities. Small work environments require cohesive teamwork and cooperation, and effective managers can elicit top performance from employees through motivation. Different types of motivation can be achieved through positive feedback, performance reviews and efficient conflict-resolution techniques.
* Increased Productivity Well-trained managers are able to set realistic goals, develop strategic work plans and make decisions quickly. This can increase the effectiveness with which your business is run. It also helps the manager gain the respect of his employees and colleagues, which can create a stronger and more cohesive work dynamic. Happy staffers who know what they are doing and why they are doing it are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs, resulting in decreased turnover. * Reduced Workplace Conflict Workplace conflict can arise when people are unsure of their roles or their duties, where there is a significant lack of communication and where problem-solving abilities are non-existent. Effectively trained managers are adept at employee relations, dispute mediation and in running a positive and focused workplace. A manager with good interpersonal skills can help increase understanding between colleagues and smooth out workplace misunderstandings.
5 GOLDEN RULES 1. Be consistent. This is the first rule because it applies to most of the others. Before your management approach can be effective, it must be consistent. You must reward the same behaviors every time they appear, discourage the same behaviors when they appear and treat every member of your team with an equal, level-headed view. 2. Focus on clarity, accuracy and thoroughness in communication. How you communicate to your team can dictate your eventual success. When relaying instructions, recapping meetings or just doling out company updates, strive for the clarity, accuracy and thoroughness of your communication. This goes for any other medium, whether that means in-person communication, email or a phone call. Clarity, accuracy and thoroughness are the best way to avoid miscommunication and keep your team on the same page. 3. Set the goal of working as a team. If you want your team members to work together, have them work for something together. Setting goals just for the department or one individual breeds a limited mentality and forces team members to remain isolated. Instead, give staffers a unified focus and purpose, to inspire them together. 4. Publicly reward and recognize hard work. When a member of your team does something exceptional, reward him/her -- with a bonus, a small trophy or even just a vocal recognition. Do this in front of the group; it will make the intended recipient feel good and show the rest of the team that hard work is rewarded. The only caveat goes back to rule one: Be consistent in your rewards so you won't be seen as playing favorites. 5. Be the example. As the manager and leader, you should set an example in terms of your behavior. If you show up late, your team will be less punctual. If you lose your temper easily, others will be amiss in keeping their emotions in check. Strive to be your own ideal of the perfect worker, especially in front of the team.
CONCLUSION SUCCESSFUL MANAGERS are made, not born. They are self-made, through continuous and never-ending work on themselves. Everyone starts at the bottom and then works his or her way up through hard, hard work, sustained over a long period of time. You can become an excellent manager when you learn and practice the behaviors, methods, and techniques of other successful managers. If you do what other successful people do, you will soon get the results that other successful people get.
