Principal Characteristics of Verbs § A verb expresses a physical or mental action or a state of being. § A main verb is either the only verb in a sentence or the last verb in a verb phrase. § Helping verbs are all of the other verbs in a verb phrase. Simple Tenses § Present tense is used to express a current or customary action. § Past tense is used to express an action that occurred before the statement. § Future tense is used to express an action that will occur in the future.
