They need a simple statement or a short phrase. They do not need elaboration or explanation in the answer. Name Describe 2 marks These command words will be commonly used on the paper and will feature in many questions. Outline These questions ask the learner to describe something in detail. The answer will be in sentences and/or in a list. There is a need for detail in the answers with elaboration of the answer. Explain 2 or more marks These command words will be commonly used on the paper and will feature in many questions. Justify These questions are asking the learner to respond in detail to the question providing a full answer with an explanation. Full and detailed sentences will be required and will often contain the word "because". A short phrase will not be acceptable, the learner will need to make a valid point and justify it. Evaluate 2 or more marks These command words will feature towards the end of some questions. Analyse • Evaluate could involve assessing or appraising a situation or product or material giving reasons to support their answers. • Analyse means examining and dissecting a situation or product giving thoughtful appropriate reasons to support the answer. It could include finding logical chains of reasoning. These questions are designed to test, stretch and challenge the more able learner. The question requires the learner to make a well-balanced argument involving both advantages and disadvantages. Extended writing will be required.
