Educator Dashboard EWS & IC Dropout Prevention Research
Early Warning Research Johns Hopkins researcher Dr. Robert Balfanz has uncovered a series of indicators that he says can predict how likely a student is to drop out of high school: attendance, behavior and course performance, which he describes as the “ABCs. ” Absent effective intervention, there is a 75 percent chance that a sixth grade child in a high-poverty school will later drop out of high school if: • The student attends less than 80 percent of the time • Fails either English Language Arts or Math • Receives an unsatisfactory behavior mark in at least one class
Early Warning System Dr. Balfanz Five Early Warning Indicators: ABC’s Attendance: 1. Course and Daily Attendance Behavior: 2. State Offense 3. School Code of Conduct Course Grades: 4. Math 5. English Language Arts
It’s great to hear what others are saying… • • It is an amazing tool. EWS is an easy way to hit the ABC's and document that you've done it. – Mandi Figlioli, Burgettstown Area SD The EWS system is an integral part of our daily operation on how we use data to increase attendance, positive behavior and improving grades. Additional benefit of the EWS Dashboard is being able to view student history to look for root causes. – Carl Bezjak, Albert Gallatin Area SD Data submissions for the EWS Dashboard mimics the PDE PIMS submissions; therefore, allowing data stewards a more streamlined and familiar approach submitting data from the schools’ student information system. – Kathy Hershberger, Albert Gallatin Area SD Susquehanna Community School District has been using the EWS/Dashboard since the start of the 2015/16 school year. It has become a valuable tool for our SAP and RTII/MTSS teams. The Early Warning System provides us an avenue to track intervention implementation by teachers. - Mark Gerchman, Susquehanna Community SD 9/6/2021 14
