REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA-
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Social These are the social reasons for providing physical activity: • Health agendas • Community cohesion • Reduced crime and anti-social behaviour • Employment opportunities • Alleviate work pressures and reduce workplace stress Recommended reading/ resource for your assessment, click on the book
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Social Health agendas: • Priorities of international, and national leading organisations (UN, government) over the next 5 -10 years. • Health agendas detail targets and goals for a select group (world, country) and will outline a POA • Exercise might not be on the agendas specifically but will play a part in multiple targets based on the high levels of benefits associated with PA and sport.
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Social Community cohesion (The bond that brings society together): • Provides common interests • Opportunity to create networks • Give participants autonomy and control through taking part • Better physical and mental health • High educational attainment • Breaking cultural barriers • Recognising difference, celebrating diversity and recognising sameness
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Social Reduce crime and anti-social behaviour: Lack of opportunities, combined with a lack of positive stimulus (boredom sets in). “Effective programmes that encourage participation in physical activities also have the potential to dampen anti-social behaviour, for instance the Premier League’s ‘Kicks’ programme which aims to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in crime hotspots through sport and development sessions. Kicks has seen a reduction of up to 60 per cent in anti-social behaviour in areas it operates in. ” (UK Active, 2018)
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Social Employment opportunities Implementing more sport and physical activity prospects in the community will create better employment opportunities and earning potential for members of that community, which in terms increase social and community cohesion: • greater productivity as a result of improved health and wellbeing • through the social capital and networks formed by group participation High educational attainment • through suggesting to employers that the individuals are healthy and motivated and thus will perform highly in their jobs. (Lechner, 2009)
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Social Alleviate work pressures and reduce workplace stress: • Ensures a fit and healthy workforce • Endorphin release • Increase motivation • Increase concentration • Improve time management • Improve workload management • Reduce staff absences Coulson, Mc. Kenna and Field (2008): 79% of the participants had improved mental and interpersonal performance on days where they exercised 74% managed their workload better 72% managed their time better 41% reported feeling more motivated to work, 27% more able to deal with stress calmly 21% reported higher concentration on work.
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Financial These are the financial reasons for providing physical activity: • Profit • Reduced cost to NHS • Tourism • Sales of sports goods
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Financial (profit) Sport and physical activity contributes £ 39 billion to the UK’s economy and a significant portion of this comes from grassroots sport. The sector boosts the economy in two ways. Directly, through job creation, and indirectly by reducing healthcare costs due to a healthier population and reducing crime. As such, the economic impact of sport is a fundamental part of our strategy and we’ll invest in sports and physical activity projects that contribute to the national and local economy. (Sport England, 2020)
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Financial (profit) “Sport is big business, contributing tens of billions of pounds – from both domestic and international markets – to the British economy every year. From big set piece events like the Tour de France Grand Départ and the Rugby World Cup, to annual sporting events like the Premier League and Wimbledon, they all have a big impact on the economy and show the strength of the UK sports industry. We want to help this industry stay on the top step of the podium for many years to come. ” (Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP)
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Financial (NHS) Reduced cost to the NHS: • Obesity – over £ 6 bn a year • Type 2 Diabetes – almost £ 9 bn a year • Cardiovascular disease – over £ 7 bn a year • Dementia – over £ 4 bn a year • Diseases caused by high blood pressure – over £ 2 bn a year Although exercise alone can’t wipe these costs, they can significantly decrease them
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PA- Financial (Tourism) UK tourism 2019: 1. Football is the number one sporting draw for international tourists to the UK with more than 800, 000 international visitors going to a football match annually 2. Tourists spend £ 684 million during their time in the country 3. The Cricket World Cup is said to have generated £ 32 million for one host city alone – Birmingham 4. In May, the British High Commission reported there was an average of 3, 500 visa applications from Indians each day purely for the Cricket World Cup. 5. IBISWorld estimates that the UK could benefit from a £ 435. 5 million economic boost by hosting the Cricket World Cup 6. In 2016, the Office for National Statistics recorded a £ 172 million inbound tourism expenditure on sport and recreation 7. The value of sport to the UK economy as a whole has increased by 5. 3 per cent yearon-year and by 40 per cent since 2010 8. Golf tourism in Northern Ireland could be worth £ 50 million by 2020
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PAEnvironmental – Keep green spaces Green spaces are everywhere from town squares and parks to golf courses and hospitals and they offer fitness, beauty, health and variety. Access to open spaces and leisure and recreational facilities has direct and indirect impacts on people’s physical and mental health, but can also enable people to build social capital. If green spaces stopped being used for sport and PA, they would likely be built on, or not factored into future developments. Read and make some notes the Kings Fund ‘Access to green and open spaces’.
REASONS FOR PROVIDING PAHistorical (National pride) It is important to provide physical activity and sport in the UK to increase patriotism and national pride, this allows the national teams to be followed more closely as a nation, and will influence sport participation at lower levels as they want to follow in the same footsteps. The positive affect that the public feels towards their country, and the love for their country, will increase social wellbeing and cohesion in communities due to a shared passion.
