Education and SCP Education for Sustainable Consumption INDONESIA
Education and SCP: Education for Sustainable Consumption INDONESIA
Background • Sustainable consumption is an integral element of sustainable development and an issue of importance, increasingly recognized by the international community. • Education for sustainable consumption is essential for learning how to make lifestyle choices in the market, consume better and more responsibly as well as to effect changes by seeking creative new solutions and engaging in policy debates.
• The importance of education in facilitating a shift towards sustainable development and in promoting sustainable consumption patterns has been internationally reaffirmed in the UN’s decision to launch a UN Decade for Sustainable Development. • ESC is a key issue, an integral part of ESD, addressed through the Marrakech Process on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), a multi-stakeholder platform that supports SCP implementation at regional and national level.
Education for Sustainable Consumption: Learning how to make choices in consumption “Education for Sustainable Consumption is a core theme of Education for Sustainable Development, and it is essential to train responsible citizens and consumers towards lifestyle base on economic and social justice, food security, ecological integrity, sustainable livelihoods, respect for all life forms and strong values that foster social cohesion, democracy and collective actions” UNESCO-DESD, Bonn Declaration, April 2009 (UN DESD Strategy 2010 -2014)
Challenges • Despite increasing international recognition, mainstreaming of education for sustainable consumption in formal education curricula as well as in informal education remains a challenge. • ESC is generally not yet considered a priority either in developing or in developed countries.
ASEAN Forum on SCP • ASEAN, lead by Indonesia, is now in the process of finalizing the ASEAN Forum on SCP. • Representatives of AMS have met on the “ASEAN Forum on SCP for the Preparation of 19 th Session of CSD and Rio+20” on 25 -26 April 2011 in Jakarta. • The second and technical meeting of this forum will be held prior to APRSCP in November 2011.
ASEAN ESC Objective • To gain same perception among AMS on the importance of Education for SCP, in particularly for the consumption side; • To identify needs and gaps on education for SCP both at national and regional level; • To set prioritized work plan and engaging donor and other stakeholder in the implementation of the work plan; • To cooperate with ASEAN Forum on SCP, which will be launched in November 2011, back-to-back with APRSCP Meeting.
• ESC aims at providing knowledge, values and skills to enable individuals and social groups to become actors of change toward more sustainable consumption behaviors. • ESC is therefore about providing citizens with the appropriate information and knowledge on the environmental and social impacts of the daily choices in consumption, as well as workable solutions and alternatives. • Formal and informal education institutions, as well as community learning centers should be the place for ESC implementation. It can be taught as integrated aspects of existing themes, courses or studies.
