THE BEGINNING OF HIS LIFE • He was born in January in the year 1552 or 1553 and died on January 13, 1599. • The exact date of birth is not known due to the Great Fire of London. • He was born in London, England died there as well. • He attended the Merchant Taylors’ school. • He was known as a “poor boy” in grammar school. • He studied multiple languages including Hebrew, Greek, and mainly Latin. • At 16 years old he left this school and went to Cambridge, where he enrolled at Pembroke Hall.
HIS MIDDLE YEARS • He married his first wife, Machabyas Childe, on October 27, 1579. • He was sent to Ireland to hold English property. • Childe died in Ireland in the year 1594. • Soon after this he met his second wife, Elizabeth Boyle. • He wrote a marriage song called “Epithalamion” which was dedicated to Boyle. • He had 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter. • He wrote most of his work on “The Faerie Queene” while he lived in Ireland.

HIS BEST WORK • “The Faerie Queene” has been known to be Spenser’s most popular set of works. • “The Faerie Queene” was written over the course of 10 years. • There were 6 books in total of “The Faerie Queene. ” • Each book has a certain focus point. • Book 1 - Holiness

LAST YEARS • He was a secretary in Ireland to Lord Grey, the lord deputy of Ireland. • Spenser was writing the 7 th book of “The Faerie Queene” when he died. • He died on January 13, 1599. • He died after carrying official letters to London concerning the desperate times in Ireland during the Nine Years War.
HIS GRAVE • He was buried with a ceremony in Westminster Abbey near Geoffrey Chaucer. • Westminster Abbey is located in London. • This is a picture of his grave.
