Edmund Charles Tarbell foi um pintor impressionista americano, nascido em West Groton, Massachusetts, em 26 de abril de 1862. Seu pai, Edmund Whitney Tarbell, morreu em 1863 depois de contrair febre tifóide, enquanto servia na Guerra Civil. Sua mãe, Maria Sophia Fernald, casou-se novamente, com David Frank Hartford e se mudou com o marido para Milwaukee, Wisconsin, deixando Tarbell e sua irmã, aos cuidados da avó paterna, em Groton. Em 1889, Tarbell assumiu o cargo de seu antigo mentor, Otto Grundmann, na “School of the Museum of Fine Arts”, como professor.
