Editorial – defined A story where author expresses opinion on a current topic Editorials can argue, explain, congratulate, make fun…etc. It can use 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd person writing (1 st person not needed) NO quotes, but lots of research

Editorial – parts Introduction – Introduces topic, w/o opinion (creative or summary lead) Reaction

Editorial – parts Introduction – Introduces topic, w/o opinion (creative or summary lead) Reaction – the author’s opinion (thesis) Details – Facts to support reaction Counterpoint – what the opposition would say, with support/detail against Conclusion/solution – Wraps up the argument, often restating parts of the reaction OR presenting solution

Other types of editorial While editorials are generally straightforward opinions on a current topic, here are some other editorial-types (cousins) you might encounter Letter to the Editor – Short editorial, generally complaining* about one particular thing Review – An editorial giving the author’s opinion on a restaurant, album, play, concert, game… generally something new. (You will do this one!) Column – When an author has a recurring spot in a publication. Usually the writing is a mix of feature and editorial, and stays focused on a general area. (Bianchi’s Sentinel sports column)

(If you are missing exam day or exam week, you better have this turned in) Plan sheet – includes topic, outline (one sentence per part), source list Research Notes – 1 sheet min. (info that supports your topic) Rough Draft w/2 edits Final Draft - The final must have all 5 parts (6 paragraph minimum) and an opinion headline (subheadline not needed)

Assignment – 10 points PUT WITH THESE NOTES Come up with EIGHT well-developed opinion statements and their opposites. At least FOUR should be review sentences. Ex. Allowing students to listen to music in school would not disrupt the educational process. Allowing students to listen to music during the school day would be a mistake, leading to problems with theft and disruption. Ex. With a great selection and friendly staff, i. Kiwi is the best yogurt place in town. While i. Kiwi has a good selection, the price and quality make it a bad choice for yogurt lovers.
