Editing Terminology With Jesse way
Continuity in editing refers to making sure everything is consistent with each other. For example, it would follow continuity to have an object to be shown on a table after it had been placed there but not beforehand. Unless the show’s Doctor Who and pulls some wibbly wobbly, timey wimey stuff on us.
180 degree rule The rule basically goes like this. If there’s movement (for example a guy getting chased by a giant walking squid), which goes from one side to another (left to right), in the next side, the figures must travel in the same direction (neither the man nor the squid may appear from the right side of the next shot. By the way, I’d totally watch such a film.
Cross Cutting A cross-cut is where the scene abruptly changes from one to another to establish continuity. In my previous giant squid example, there would be a cross-cut the moment both of the characters run off the screen, and then both man and squid would continue the chase in the next scene, which is why it’s important that characters don’t appear from the opposite side. (180 degree rule. ) Also, there’s no illustration here, because I’m not doing that diagram again. It's far too complex.
Matching On Action This is a phrase which here means a cut which connects two sides of the same viewpoint. For example, a side image which seamlessly cuts to the front. This is displayed here in these nifty looking code pictures. Eye-line Matching And finally, we have this. This is where a character is in a scene looking at something and the very next shot is what they're looking at. Basically, you can see what they see. In my giant squid example from before, the guy could be gazing in horror at the squid only to show it in its sinister glory. Truth be told, though, if someone ever handed me editing this shoddy, I'd probably toss them out of a window. Thank goodness it's me doing it.
