Basic Editing: • Editing is the process by which a film sequence is constructed • ie how the frames are put together. • CONTINUITY EDITING is a system used to maintain a clear forward-moving narrative action.
Basic Continuity: • is a complex business! It involves ensuring all your shots match and do not jar with the audience. • Includes costume, hair, screen positions etc.
Cross Cutting/Parallel Editing • The cutting between two points of action in one scene to establish opposing characters or things happening at the same time: • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Ts 1 x 6 u. ADFt. M • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=S_I 82117 o. Aw
The Kuleshov Effect: • An effect where the viewer creates meaning from the use of two shots put together: • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=_g. Gl 3 LJ 7 v. Hc • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=96 xx 383 lpi. I
The 180 rule (Axis of Action): • A ‘rule’ whereby you draw an imaginary line across your action and keep your camera one side of the line! • If you ‘cross the line’ the image on screen will flip, confusing the viewer:
Shot Reverse Shot • An editing technique where one character is looking at another character and vice versa (usually done with repeated close ups of their faces) • Editing technique used to convey conflict or conversation between two or more characters • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=h 0 xi.
