EDIT2012 Detector School at Fermilab Excellence in Detector
EDIT-2012 Detector School at Fermilab “Excellence in Detector and Instrumentation Technology” In 2011, Adam Para and Ariel Cattai surveyed young researchers as to their desire for training in particle detectors. First school at CERN was a response to the strong desire for such, shown in this ICFA survey. EDIT 2011 was a big success, with 88 students participating. Fermilab committed to having next school in February, 2012 For graduate students/early Ph. D. ’s 10 days of hands-on detector experience, including two days in the test beam. (We wanted this school to emphasize hands-on activities. ) Applications were accepted starting late Summer. 205 applicants for 64 slots! Logistics • 64 students, split into 8 groups of 8 • 4 comprehensive ‘tracks’, of 2 days each: § § Fundamentals of radiation detection Silicon tracking detectors Photodetection Test Beam • Stagger groups - only 1 group covers one day’s topic at a time • Day started with a single plenary lecture at 8: 30, followed by transportation to field locations • In-depth tours of FNAL Facilities and Detector Halls on staggered tour day • No charge for the school. Students had to pay their own travel and their own lodging. • School hotel was at Pheasant Run – good choice (Each color is a different track)

Results • • • We are still evaluating surveys, but on a scale of 1 to 5, we seem to have a lot of 4’s and 5’s Anecdotal evidence says that this school achieved its aims of introducing detailed detector knowledge to a group of young researchers who had not had that experience Several students indicated that this was a career transforming event Many of the instructors (including myself) were saddened that they could not take the course themselves. However, it was an exhausting experience, not to be undertaken lightly. Junji Haba, detector research head at KEK, came to the last two days and announced that KEK would host the 2013 school.
