VITAL TREND # 1 Visualisation tools and analytics to monitor online language learning & teaching Learning analytics is a new and promising research field which can be defined as “the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners in their context, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environment in which it occurs” (Siemens et. Al). VITAL aims at the development of a generic model for implementing learning analytics in interactive e-learning tools, which can be reused in different educational settings, countries, courses. The goal of VITAL is to map existing learning patterns in 4 different types of online language learning and teaching and maths courses and to feed back this new knowledge to the most important educational actors themselves, being the students and their lecturers. -Tools/applications will allow both the teachers and the students to understand how they learn online but also to compare their profile to user patterns of their peers. -Educators get active and real-time feedback of how their students are progressing, which students might be at risk of dropping out or of failing for the course and which parts of the courses cause difficulties/require more feedback. TREND # 3 play. DXTR- THE WORLD’S SMARTEST BUILDING BLOCKS Technology has opened up new avenues for play. DXTR combines the fun physical play of building blocks with advanced wireless connected technology. The technology embedded in the blocks; observes, monitors, and quantifies the child's cognitive development. Your child gets a fun, challenging, personalized, and motivational toy, while you get an empowering tool that gives you actionable reports about your child. • play. DXTR composes of 27 smart and magnetic blocks named Kubits. Each Kubit has built-in sensors that communicate with the other Kubits. These sensors enables one to register motion direction. Orientation and relative connections between the Kubits. • Parents/teachers will get a clear picture of their children/students competencies as well as intelligent suggestions for games, challenges, and activities that will strengthen the child’s various talents. • The opportunity presents itself whereby you would know where, when, and how to embrace a child’s natural potential and confidence through playful learning as it’s an educational toy which gives you real time information about your child’s developmental progress. Essentially, AR takes an existing picture and blends new information into it. From a very recent articled publish 2 nd, December, 2015 on the Engadget website, according to the retail giant, Amazon augmented reality (AR) isn't all headsets and funny glasses. They want to evolve it into a very interactive session that involves your living room. • "Object tracking" shows how a system of projectors and cameras could beam virtual images onto real objects, and track your hand while you interact with them. • The other, called "reflector-based depth mapping, " would use a projector to transform your room into a kind of holodeck, mapping the depth of objects and bodies in a room. TREND From Text to Scene # 5 Today’s professionals and researchers are bridging the gap between language, graphics, and knowledge by converting text into “a new type of semantic representation” i. e, a virtual three-dimensional scene. (Rouhizadeh et al. ). Experiments have been conducted with children’s stories and patient education materials, “translating natural language utterances into instructions in a graphical world”. Hence, CORDIS (community research and development information service) have announced, that they plan to bring this text-to-scene technology into the market and make it commercially available to public. Some examples of text to scene (Wordseye, learn immersive and the MUSE project) • Text-to-scene technology can have tremendous impact on multiple industries, in particular the gaming industry. • Level of interactivity can make telling and listening to stories more appealing and memorable. • Used in schools, text-to-scene technology can make teaching programmes more effective and impactful. • Researchers from Columbia university and Oregon health and science university propose potential use of this technology in education including special needs learning, vocabulary building, and creative storytelling. Paper, electronic ink or e ink is a technology that mimics the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Hence, it is proving to be a platform on which incredible and versatile projects can be realized. • e-paper can be used for various of indoor or outdoor displays, from traffic signs to passenger information, shelf labels in stores, interactive museum signs and all types of notice boards, being driven as the displays of traffic operators, schools, office administrators and many more. • e-paper is becoming ever more advanced (case in point: flexible displays), thin, robust and durable, not to mention having a longer battery life, the electronic paper signage sector will no doubt be one to watch in the years to come. Engaging a user in a virtual world, or gesture based browsing has the potential to promote meaningful learning as they interact with computers in class, thus encouraging active learning methods and allowing the participant to take more control of their learning. More active, student-centered approaches to classroom learning are becoming more common. According to Charlie Osboune on ZDNet, "What makes gesture-based technology unique in this respect is that it has the potential to allow collaborative efforts on a broader scale — more than setting up a classroom blog, or using Power. Point to create a presentation, and can be used to further promote content engagement. “ Innovative Education: http: //blogs. msdn. com/b/innovative-education/archive/2012/06/07/gesture-basedtechnology-what-can-it-mean-for-education. aspx Gesture-based tech: A future in education: http: //www. zdnet. com/article/gesture-based-tech-a-future-ineducation/

TREND 3 D Printing Advanced # 9 According to 3 dprinting. com, 3 D

TREND 3 D Printing Advanced # 9 According to 3 dprinting. com, 3 D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3 D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. There are several key developments in the industry which all are scheduled to culminate around 2017. HP’s entrance into the 3 D printing arena via the launch of their first Multi Jet Fusion machines is expected to launch sometime near the end of 2016. What the technology does is allow for the rapid manufacturing of multiple parts via a sintering process, which strays far from the typical process used today involving lasers. This technology itself has the potential to revolutionize mass manufacturing, as companies could achieve large-scale production 3 D Print: http: //3 dprint. com/71029/3 d-printing-2017/ 3 D Printing. Reflection This assignment was by far the most challenging experience that I have encountered

Reflection This assignment was by far the most challenging experience that I have encountered in the entire Post Graduate Programme. The extent to which research was require was very tedious. Searching trying to find emerging trends for 2017 was a lot of information intake and determination to focus and get 10 trends. I was a bit unsure about a few being a trend in 2017 but trying to be a futurist does not mean that predicted trends will occur in the stated time. However, it was a great feeling to be able to forecast what to expect in the year 2017 where IT, ID and DE is concerned. The journey in completing this assignment was a meaningful learning experience despite the ups and downs of researching. It was indeed an eye-opener when you can attest to the amount of information that is out there with regards to everything after doing such intense research. The different cultures and opinions surrounding information with regards to teaching methods, VR, AR, education, science etc was very interesting and informative for me. I think I felt my brain grew with a lot of information. Conversely, I would have like a bit feedback/guidance with an earlier scheduled BBC session from our e-tutor/course coordinator. But all in all it’s done and I am grateful for the experience I got. Looking forward to the end of this semester.
