Paper 1 Drama and Prose 1 hour 45 minutes 60% of GCSE Drama = ‘An Inspector Calls’ Prose = ‘Of Mice and Men’ Closed book exam
Paper 1 AO 1 a close knowledge and understanding of prose, poetry and drama texts and their contexts AO 2 understanding and appreciation of writers’ uses of the following: characterisation, theme, plot and setting AO 4 a focused, sensitive, lively and informed personal engagement with literary texts
What to do? Section A Answer one question (from a choice of two) on the drama text. The first question is related to characters Section B The second question has a wider focus (themes, setting, opinion) Choose one from the two options
Paper 2 Unseen Texts and Poetry Anthology 1 hour and 30 minutes 40% of GCSE Open ‘book’ – clean poetry anthology provided in exam
Paper 2 AO 3 Understanding of the writers’ use of language, structure and form to create literary effects AO 4 A focused, sensitive, lively and informed personal engagement with literary texts.
What to do? Section A Answer either the question on the unseen poem or the question on the unseen extract: bullet points to structure the answer. Section B Answer one question (from a choice of two) based on the poetry anthology. The first question names two poems and you must write about these poems if you choose this question. The second question names one poem and allows you to choose the other poem from the anthology.
What can you do? Paper 1 • Prose –> text –> reader • Drama –> play –> audience • Accuracy in spelling of writers: Steinbeck, Priestley, characters’ names • Quotes, key lines
What can you do? Paper 2 Techniques: • Rhyme / Rhythm / Structure / Stanzas • Form – ballad, sonnet, free verse, monologue • Imagery / Metaphor / Similes / Personification • Tone / Senses / Juxtaposition / Themes • Emotive Language / Connotations
