EDDIE ADAMS “SAIGON EXECUTION” Zach Anders

Feb. 1, 1968 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The man is Viet Cong leader Nguyen Van Lem Allegedly carried out the execution of 34 people that morning, including the family of General Loan’s friends and three Americans

General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, Chief of National Police “If you hesitate, if you didn’t do your duty, the men won’t follow you. ” – Loan “This picture really messed up his life. He never blamed me. He told me if I hadn’t taken the picture, someone else would have, but I’ve felt bad for him and his family for a long time. ” - Adams

New York Times runs the image but editors worry it lacks context, includes a photo of a dead child below the image to use as example of Viet Cong brutality

Adams is haunted by the image and the impact it had on Loan, wishes his other photographs from the war had been more prevalent.
