Educational Repositories Bridging the gap between users and content
2007 -2010: 10 expert workshops 4 strategic seminars
An intro to discussion of and elaboration on. . . “recommendations […] in the order in which networks members have given them priority […] judged from the surveys filled in either during group discussions at the final strategic seminar […] or individually afterwards”
Four major themes • • Repository strategies Standards and interoperability Engaging users Rights issues Recommendations report
Repository strategies • Leverage the support of existing communities of practice by supporting their needs (95%) • Take advantage of generally used, open standards to allow for the broadest range of partnerships, future adaptability and innovation (87%) • Engage with all stakeholders early in the planning process and base development on user needs (87%)

Standards and interoperability “It seems striking that many of the most successful repository initiatives – measured in terms of active users – have not heavily engaged with educational technology standards. Community based approaches would by nature tend to focus on solving user needs with already available tools – i. e. a focus on iterative “good enough” approaches instead of relying on implementation of specific standards. ”
Standards and interoperability - topics discussed • Metadata standards • LOM profiles • Automatic metadata generation • Strategies for vocabularies and curriculum mapping • Standardized content packages • Repository integration with Learning Management Systems • Authentication / Identity management
Standards and interoperability - recommendations* • Present clear and easy‐to‐understand information on usage rights (100%) • Support the development of ‘sharing as a culture’ by providing user friendly mechanisms for depositing and repurposing (100%) • Make it easier to find quality content (82%) *Based on use cases – see synthesis report

Engaging users* • Analyze user behaviour to support development (100%) • It should be easy for users to invite friends (96%) • Make it easy to participate – for all members (95%) • …. * Synthesis report includes discussion on producers and design patterns
