Ecology Water Clouds Tiffiny Smart Objectives and Common
Ecology, Water & Clouds Tiffiny Smart
Objectives and Common Core Standards ▪ Objectives ▪ Students will be able to identify Cumulus, Cirrus, Stratus and Nimbus clouds ▪ Students will be able to understand identify the different aspects of the water cycle ▪ Students will be able to identify the Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere and Atmosphere as it applies to the water cycle. ▪ Common Core Standards: ▪ Goal 4. 1: Understand Scientific Theories of Origin and Subsequent Changes in the Universe and Earth Systems ▪ 6. S. 4. 1. 1 Explain the interactions among the solid Earth, Oceans, Atmosphere and Organisms ▪ 6. S. 4. 1. 2 Explain the Water cycle and its relationship to weather and climate ▪ 6. S. 4. 1. 3 Identify Cumulus, Cirrus, and stratus clouds and how they relate to weather changes
Ecology: The Litho, Hydro, Bio & Atmosphere § LITHOSPHERE: Earths crust, made up of minerals. § HYDROSPHERE: Water on and near the earth (oceans, rivers, lakes, moisture in air) § BIOSPHERE: All living things and the environment they live in § ATMOSPHERE: The air surrounding the earth ECOLOGY THE PART OF BIOLOGY THAT STUDYS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIVING ORGANISM AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTS
The Water Cycle ▪ Evaporation: Water (liquid) turns into Water Vapor (gas) and enters the atmosphere ▪ Condensation: When water vapor gets cold and turns back into a liquid ▪ Precipitation: Water droplets become to heavy to stay in the clouds, and falls to Earth ▪ Collection: When precipitation is collected in streams, lakes, or oceans
Clouds: Cirro-form & Cumulo-form ▪ Cirro-Form: “Curl of Hair” ▪ Indicates a change in weather ▪ High level clouds ▪ Cumulo-Form: “Heap, pile” ▪ Fair weather (picnic perfect) ▪ Low-level clouds
Clouds: Stratus-form and Nimbo-form ▪ Stratus-form: “Layer or sheet” ▪ Light precipitation ▪ Low-mid/high clouds ▪ Nimbo-form: “Rain” ▪ Nimbostratus: layered clouds ▪ Rain or precipitation ▪ Middle to high clouds ▪ Cumulonimbus: ▪ Thunderstorms ▪ Low –high clouds Clouds Stratus. Nimbostratus Clouds Cumulonimbus
Summary ▪ Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere ▪ Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Collection ▪ Cirrus-form, Cumulo-form, Stratus-form, Nimbo-form
Activity: Check For Understanding • Grab a piece of construction paper • Grab some colored pencils, cotton balls, and glue • Create a diagram showing the four different types of clouds, the water cycle, and the Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere and atmosphere • MUST SHOW: • Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Collection. • Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere • Stratus, Cumulus, Cirrus, Nimbus clouds • Creativity
