What is sea-bird? Sea bird may be defined as a bird lives on the sea and finds food in it. Marine birds are the species of that have adapted themselves mainly in the marine environment.
Characteristics of seabirds All birds are Endothermic, covered with feathers, have wings, using beaks and claws. ØSome seabirds like the Laysan Albatross are extraordinary flyers. ØOther seabirds like penguins and flightless cormorants have completely lost the ability to fly in order to become better swimmers.
ØMost sea bird only come to land to breed. Prime breeding locations are often remote islands and cliff sides that were historically free of predators. ØSea bird are long lived and are late to reach reproductive maturity.
Classification of Seabirds Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Aves Orders: 1. Sphenisciform-penguins 2. Procellariiformes-albatrosses 3. Pelecaniformes-pelicans 4. Charadriiformes-skuas
§Loons and grebes which nest on lakes but winter at sea , are usually categorized as water birds, not sea birds. Although there a number of sea ducks in the family Anatidae that are truly marine in the water. §Many wanders and herons are also highly , living on the seas edge (cost) but are also not threated as seabirds.
Ecological Importance What is ecosystem? The word ecosystem is short form of Ecological System. An Eco-system is the sum of all the relationships between plants, animals an their surrounding environment in a specific area.
Ecologically services typically fall into one of the four catagories. v. Provisioning services such as game meet for food down for garments and guano for fertilizer. v. Regulating service such as scavenging carcasses and waste , controlling populations of invertebrate and vertebrate pests polluting plants, and dispersing seeds.
v. Supporting services such as cycling nutrients and even contributing to soil formation. v. Cultural services exemplified by birds prominent roles in art and religion and by the billions of dollars spent on bird watching.
Economical Importance They are very essential for human and over daily economy. Marine birds and human are have a lot of history at the same time. ØThey provided food for the hunters showed the fishermen their way to the fishing bases and showed the way to the reach sailors to the ground. ØSea birds in many countries perform a major role in managing beaches.
ØHistorically sea birds and their eggs were an important part of food an economic asset, the eggs and meats are still from the key source of protein. ØBones were used to make fishing hooks and musical instrument.
ØSea birds has provided food away from home to fishermen as well as whip. ØViewing sea bird is an increasingly popular pastimes for many tourists.
