USING THE CORRECT NOZZLE Matching the right nozzles with the pump and engine is the only way to get the right pressure. The parts manuals clearly list which nozzle kit goes with each pressure washer.

NOZZELE INFORMATION Zero-degree nozzle – (code stamp 00) provides a concentrated stream for blasting or gouging away stains. It is excellent for: Cleaning overhead areas and kitchen vents Removing dried and caked material from equipment and vehicles Removing heavy stains and buildup from concrete Removing rust and other types of oxidation

NOZZLE INFORMATION 15 -degree nozzle – This provides a little wider spray and acts like a scraper. It is wellsuited for: Heavy duty scraping of water vehicles and equipment Heavy mildew stain removal Removing rust and other types of oxidation Scraping grease and dirt from many surfaces, Paint from wood, masonry, and metal

NOZZLE INFORMATION 40 -degree nozzle – This nozzle washes large surface areas quickly. Its best uses are for Light cleaning, washing, and rinsing Washing and rinsing cars, pickups, boats, and other watercraft Cleaning flat surfaces such as roofs, windows, patios, and driveways

SOAP NOZZLE Used to apply soap.

CLEANING UNITS The industry standard for measuring cleaning power is the “Cleaning Unit. ” The formula to determine Cleaning Units is PSI X GPM. For example, the pictured pump is 3000 PSI, 2. 8 GPM, making 8400 Cleaning units

PW 1813 = 2340 CLEANING UNITS

PW 2700 = 6210 CLEANING UNITS

PW 3000 = 8400 CLEANING UNITS

PW 4000 = 16, 000 CLEANING UNITS

PUMPS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE COMPLICATED, BUT ARE REALLY FAIRLY SIMPLE

PUMPS CAN BE LOOKED AT AS TWO PARTS The brass half of the pump is the manifold. Also known as the “wet” side The black aluminum half is the cam and/or piston housing. Also known as the “dry” or “oil” side. All of the pumps will have the same basic structure.

WHICH PUMP DO I HAVE? There are two ways to determine the correct pump. 1: Match the pump to the model of the pressure washer. In this case, it is a pump from a PW 3000. 2: Check if it has an ID sticker. If the label is still on the pump, the pump model is in bold, across the top. The typical label location for a cam drive pump is shown here.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AXIAL PUMP & A CAM DRIVE (TRIPLEX) PUMP? Axial Pump Triplex Pump

AXIAL DRIVE PUMPS WIL BE REPLACED MORE OFTEN Axial drive pumps have a shorter life span, and so will need replacement more often than cam drive pumps. (About 250 -300 Hrs) Typical label location on Axial Pumps is on piston housing, next to the manifold.

AXIAL PUMPS ARE ALMOST MAINTENANCE FREE The pump cases are sealed, and do not have an oil drain or fill opening. While oil seal kits and water seal kits are available, most customers will be better off replacing the pump. Parts plus rebuild labor will add up to more than a new pump, in many cases.

AXIAL PUMPS USE A “WOBBLE PLATE” TO DRIVE THE PISTONS As the pump turns, the wobble plate oscillates, pushing the pistons back and forth. Wobble Plate

Typical Cam Drive (Triplex) Pump Cam drive pumps are much more durable than Axial Drive pumps. (1000 hours) They are also more expensive, which makes rebuilding them a more viable option.

Triplex pumps are driven by a crankshaft and pistons. The configuration is much like an internal combustion engine. The brass ends attached to the pistons act as the connecting rod, bearing, and rod cap

CUTAWAY ILLUSTRATION OF A TRIPLEX PUMP The crank and pistons run in an oil bath, and are very reliable. Pump oil on Triplex pumps should be changed once a year. Rebuilds will likely be limited to seal kits.

Bearings are retained by a simple Snap ring The bearings are very heavy duty, and quite durable. Replacing bearings is unlikely, but if necessary, parts are available. Simply remove the snap ring and extract the bearing like any other bearing.

MANIFOLDS HAVE A HIGHE PRESSURE SIDE AND A LOW PRESSURE SIDE The area shown in blue is the water inlet, low pressure side of the pump.

Manifold The blue areas in this photo show the supply side water path, feeding each piston through check valves

Manifold Red areas are water outflow, high pressure areas.

LOCATION OF WATER SEALS Water seals are the most likely item to require servicing

PUMP REBUILD 101: FIRST, IDENTIFY THE PUMP

NEXT, IDENITFY THE PROBLEM What is the Issue? Is the pump leaking? If yes, What is leaking, water or oil? Where is it leaking? Is the problem Low/No pressure? Are the correct nozzles being used?

IF THE PUMP IS AN AXIAL PUMP: Remember if it is an axial pump, weigh carefully if it makes more sense to replace or rebuild. Remember, seals are not a warranty item

AXIAL vs. CAM DRIVE PUMPS The PW 3000 pump is $398. 98 MSRP. The PW 2700 pump is $184. 98. The PW 3000 pump will last about 4 x as long as the axial pump. The Honda engines can be expected to last 1000 plus hours.

AXIAL PUMP WASHER 2700 PSI Honda GC 160 Axial pumps use a wabble plate to move pistons and last roughly 500 hours AR is the Italian manufacturer 1 year over the counter pump swap

TRIPLEX PUMP WASHERS 3000 PSI Honda GX 200 4000 PSI Honda GX 390 Triplex plunger pumps use bronze connecting rods attached to a crankshaft to move pistons and last over 1000 hours Pistons are Italian ceramic GPM is very important Take PSI multiply by GPM to get cleaning units
