The “Immunize On Time, Every Time!” Initiative • Initiative funded by Wyeth Vaccines • Collaboration with immunization stakeholders in four states – Ohio (Cleveland), New Jersey (Newark), Texas (Houston), and Nevada (Las Vegas) • Assistance in media outreach, material development and event planning by Porter Novelli
The “Immunize On Time, Every Time!” Initiative Overall Goal: To increase the knowledge of the importance of timely immunizations in order to increase childhood immunization rates in Cleveland, Houston, Newark and Las Vegas
The Importance of Collaboration • Immunization stakeholders in each city/state were brought in at the beginning of the initiative. • Throughout the project, over 70 conference calls and almost 3, 000 emails exchanged • Each city’s initiative was tailored to meet their needs. The “Immunize On Time, Every Time” Alliance determined… -Target groups (e. g. , Low-income African American, Hispanic, Asian, and/or Caucasian) -Two-pronged approach: public education and provider education
The Importance of Collaboration continued… • The “Alliance” determined… -Location and activities for the public education portion of the event. (e. g. , No “tattoos” at the Bergen Street Festival in Newark; mariachi band at Lorenzi Park in Las Vegas) -Wording, pictures and Spanish translation (if necessary) for the event flyers, event signs, letters to VIPs and providers, and doctor’s office posters (consensus on all materials) -Items to be included in immunization education packet to providers and which providers should receive them.
Materials Distributed at Public Education Events • “Immy” - customized Build-a-Bears with immunization message • Customized child-sized t-shirts • Customized immunization stickers • Customized immunization boxes of crayons • ECBT’s “Friends at the Zoo” coloring books • Customized plastic bags with IZ logo • Customized immunization handouts (small poster) • Immunization education information materials from a variety of sources (e. g. , health dept. , CHOP’s Vaccine Education Center, IAC) • Immunization registry information pamphlets/handouts
Main Messages for Families at Public Education Events • At every visit, ask the doctor or nurse if your children are up-to-date on their vaccines • Ask your doctor if your children are in the immunization registry • An immunization registry will help you and your doctor keep track of your children’s immunizations without having to rely on the immunization card

VFC Provider Education • Packets included: • Letter from the Immunize On Time, Every Time Alliance (ECBT, state and local DOH, coalition, etc. ) • Clip-on animals with immunization message on t-shirt and buttons with immunization messages • Immunization schedule (in some cities) • ECBT’s CD-ROM that promotes immunization registries • ECBT’s targeted immunization brochure for pediatricians and family physicians (only used in Las Vegas) • State/city immunization registry information • Summary of important immunization research and selected scientific article abstracts • Poster with immunization messages for office display (in English (Spanish version also provided in Las Vegas and Houston) – Toll-free numbers on the posters for evaluation purposes
Provider Education • Depending upon the city, modified immunization education packets were distributed to: • • OB/GYNs Daycare centers Prenatal class instructors WIC centers (stamps imprinted with immunization message) • Evaluation: • Number of calls to the toll-free telephone number on the posters (except for Newark) • Private provider participation in the registry • Number of children with records in the registry • Feedback on VFC provider education packets
