EBSCO EDS and e Books on EBSCOHost high
EBSCO EDS and e. Books on EBSCOHost: high value content and access solutions for the library of the future Piraeus, Hellas - October 18 th 2012
Why did EDS take longer to develop / release than other discovery services? • EBSCO has 17 advisory boards made up entirely of librarians • Years ago, we explained to our board members that “platform blending” was possible, but would require “unprecedented development” • Board members urged us not to simply release a service dependent almost solely on full-text searching • Members favored delayed release over quick release without integration of subject indexes • EBSCO took the advice knowing that we would be last to market, suffer short-term losses, and not be able to offer a fully featured API until May 2012
EBSCO’s Discovery Definition • Fast, simple access to all of the library’s full-text content (electronic and print) in a single search box – Journals – Magazines – Newspapers – Books – Library Catalog – And any other important source type…
The Library Catalog is Loaded • Real-time availability checks • Daily updates for catalog changes • Everything indexed in the catalog will be available for discovery searching
EDS is different from other discovery services because it offers superior full-text searching AND superior indexing of journals & magazines
More Complete Full-Text Searching for Journals & Magazines Than Any Other Discovery Service
Much More Complete Subject Indexing for Journals & Magazines Than Any Other Discovery Service Due to “Platform Blending”
How Does Platform Blending Work? A fast, direct & smart line of communication between EDS and EBSCOhost Fast =All resources loaded locally on EBSCO systems Direct =A fully-enabled, dedicated open interaction between EDS and high-end indexes on EBSCOhost Smart =Technology developed to leverage relevancy ranking from EDS, facet utilization & fully integrated results
