Anorexia Nervosa • Definition – An eating disorder that involves: • severe loss of weight • loss of menstrual cycle • >15% below ideal body weight
Anorexia Nervosa • Characteristics – Less likely to be depressed than bulimics – Don’t or can’t keep it a secret – Very self-controlled – Classic “good girl”
Anorexia Nervosa • Medical Consequences – Kidney failure – Liver failure – Heart failure
Bulimia Nervosa • Definition – An eating disorder that involves binging on food and purging by vomiting or excessive use of laxatives – Purging: • Vomiting • Hyper-exercise • Fasting • Laxatives • Diet pills
Bulimia Nervosa • Characteristics – Pre-occupied with food – “forbidden foods” – More likely to be depressed – Better at keeping it a secret – Begins on purpose but can take over
Bulimia Nervosa • Ulcers (stomach, esophagus, gums, cheeks, nasal passages) • Cancer – Stomach – Throat – Mouth – Gums • Wear enamel off teeth
Anorexia-Bulimia • Definition – Show characteristics of both disorders • Characteristics – Show binge-purge characteristics – Binge is often smaller than a person with bulimia nervosa
