Eat, Drink & Move “Food and Drink should be on a par with medicine in hospitals” Ref; Keogh NNNG Nursing Standard, 9 October 2013 EAT FACT: Our hospital food is cooked by the trust catering department to meet the needs of patients. This includes religious and cultural, vegetarian and vegan, food allergies and modified texture menu choices. ACTION: Come and try the menu at our come dine with me events ‘Come Dine with Me’ Solihull : 13 th March 2017 Heartlands : 13 th March 2017 Good Hope : 16 th March 2017 DRINK FACT: Poor fluid intake increases risk of falls, confusion, headaches, UTIs, pressure ulcers (THINK SSKIN) ACTION: When you are with a patient offer them a drink and put it within reach when you leave them Encourage milky drinks between meals for patients with a poor appetite to increase protein and energy intake EAT FACT: Patients with poor appetite need snacks and milky drinks in between meals to help provide all the nutrients they need. A wide range of snacks is available to offer to patients on all wards ACTION: Offer a slice of cake or a snack of choice, fruit, yogurt, cheese & crackers to patients who need snacks between meals – don’t forget to offer milky drinks too! GO THE EXTRA 500! Two milky drinks and two snacks a day gives an extra 500 kcals and 20 g protein a day! MOVE FACT: Keeping patients mobile helps reduce risk of pressure ulcers and hospital acquired pneumonia. Activity also improves appetite, social contact, well being ACTION: Encourage patients to bring in their own clothes and footwear and get dressed each day if they can #end. PJparalysis Assist patients to walk to the toilet & to the food trolley to choose meals. Aim for 900 steps a day for those who can! #900 steps Wednesday 15 th March is World Wide Afternoon Tea Day – what will you do on your ward? ‘Make a meal of afternoon tea’. What can you do to make tea time an event patients enjoy on your ward? Ideas wards already use include china cups, music, tea in the dayroom , time to chat with volunteers.
