s l i o F r e t c a r a Ch TASK Identify 3 characters who you think act as foils in The Tempest. For each example, explain how the character functions as a foil. Include quotations relating to both characters to justify your choice. A foil is a character that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character with the objective to highlight the traits of the other character. The term foil, though generally being applied for a contrasting character, may also be used for any comparison that is drawn to portray a difference between two things. Antonio: The True Villain of The Tempest Read Lauren Arnold’s critical essay on the character of Antonio before completing this task. 1. Research the terms: ‘Machiavellian’ and ‘malcontent’ (you could refer to your notes on The Duchess of Malfi). In your opinion, are these fitting terms for the character of Antonio? Give evidence to support your answer. 2. The critic claims Prospero is “distinctly Machiavellian in his manipulation of others on the island, particularly Ariel” thus comparing Prospero’s actions with those of Antonio. Do you think this is a fair comparison? Why/Why not? 3. How does Arnold justify the view that Antonio has the most to gain from the killing of Alonso? 4. Why do conspirators live in fear? Using evidence from the play explain whether you think Antonio has anything to fear of Sebastian.
