HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT Eastern Europe is known as a Shatter belt (powder keg) because it keeps fracturing along cultural and ethnic lines. Yugoslavia tried to take many smaller regions based on ethnicity and combine into one country § National protest and economic crisis led to new ethnic based countries and civil war § Ethnic cleansing was mainly used to clear disputed areas § NATO stepped in to stop it Countries in the area have been shaped by § Ethnic Identity § Peace Treaties of war § History of the region

CULTURE The region is very diverse with many languages and religions being practiced. § Most of the languages have a Slavic background § Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Rusyn, Czech, Polish, Slovak, Lower Sorbian, Upper Sorbian and Kashubian § The different languages make it hard to unify the people § Three Main Religions § Roman Catholic § Orthodox Christian § Islam § These religions have caused many conflicts in the area.
