What is the Atmosphere? • Atmosphere = a mixture of gases that surrounds the earth. 3
What Gases Make-Up The Atmosphere? The main gases of the atmosphere: 1. 2. 3. 4. Nitrogen – 78% Oxygen – 21% Argon – 0. 93% Carbon Dioxide – 0. 03% 4
The Layers of the Atmosphere Space 5. Thermosphere 4. Mesosphere 3. Stratosphere 2. Tropopause 1. Troposphere Ground 5
Troposphere • Closets to the ground. • Temperature gets lower as you get higher. • All weather events occur here. 6
Tropopause • Between Troposphere & Stratosphere • Called the “lid”. Keeps weather from entering other layers. 7
Stratosphere • Temperature gets warmer as you get higher. • Ozone layer is found here. 8
Mesosphere • Temperature gets cooler as you get higher. 9
Thermosphere • Temperature gets warmer as you get higher. 10
Weather = Conditions of the atmosphere at any one time at any one location. Examples: It is snowing in Brighton. Hawaii is 80°F and sunny today. There was hail in Detroit today. 11
Climate = Average of any weather conditions over a long period of time in a particular region. Examples: Winter in Brighton has lots of snow and is very cold. Summers in Florida are very hot and humid. The average yearly temperature in Louisiana is 60°F. 12
