Purpose of EMA z Provide both student and instructor with information about expectations and performance of a student in the class. y See ASEE 99 paper for more explanation if interested z Answer such questions as y What are the student's expectation during this course -- a good pass or an excellent pass? y Is the student performing as well as expected during all the course work given course learning curve? y Is the student’s performance consistent, or erratic? y What can be done to bring a mark to a level needed for a particular career path? y Was the quiz set too hard relative to instructor’s intended level of difficulty? 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Spreadsheet Content z The INTRODUCTORY page -- Unofficial GPA calculation z EXPECTED GPA page -- NO CHANGES AFTER TERM START y completed at the start of the term. y This mark is based on the probable class average y how well the student has done, relative to the class average, in previous courses. z The PLANNED GPA page -- NO CHANGES AFTER TERM START y completed at the start of the term. y Student to make adjustments to the expected GPA to meet some professional or personal requirement. z The TRACKED GPA page -- CHANGE AFTER EACH QUIZ/EXAM y updated by the student after every in-class quiz. y Predicted marks for the current quizzes and laboratories y Update previous quizzes and laboratories are updated. z The WHATIF page -- A PLANNED GPA YOU CAN CHANGE y generate a new PLAN for future labs and quizzes z The final page -- adjusting anything in this page will probably cause the spreadsheet to fail-- Earned or give inaccurate results. Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning On this page you are asked five

Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning On this page you are asked five questions (GREEN) concerning your performance in previous classes in in-class quizzes, laboratories, midterms, final exams and when the class does new activities. Don't modify other sections of the page. z Place one of the following responses in the answer box to the right of each question. y +10 -- indicating that your normal performance is well above the class average y +5 -- little above the class average y 0 -- around class average y -5 -- little below class average y -10 -- well below class average z Remember -- GIGO -- BE REALISTIC! y There are NO MARKS for HIGH MARK y Just MARKS FOR DOING THE PREDICTION SENSIBLY ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking 12/17/2021 Copyright M. Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning z Calculates unofficial expected GPA for the

Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning z Calculates unofficial expected GPA for the each course component based on y your performance in previous classes y relative difficulty of each course component based on previous classes. z NOTE -- Range of GPAs rather than an actual mark. y Student will not have a stable process (of doing each component) so that there is about a 10% inaccuracy in each individual prediction. z Final prediction is more accurate that the individual predictions. y Error associated with the individual predictions tend to cancel 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning z Steep learning curve associated with this

Step 2 -- Expected GPA -- Planning z Steep learning curve associated with this course based around learning how to use a new type of processor and language with parallel capabilities. z Note that the marks associated with each GPA level range are set at the start of the course and there is not a moving target. y. Meet the instructor's expectations, then everybody gets an A. z Once completed, this web page of your expected GPA for each course component remains unchanged for the rest of the term. 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Step 3 -- Planned GPA -- Planning z Adjust the EXPECTED GPA prediction to

Step 3 -- Planned GPA -- Planning z Adjust the EXPECTED GPA prediction to better reflect what your own expectations, or needs, are for the course. z For example, your previous performance may indicate a B+, but you want to adjust the course components to find out what is necessary to get the A or A- grade you want for personal satisfaction or a job requirement. z REMEMBER y Fast initial learning curve associated with this course so don’t change marks for early components much y 5 % change -- easy y 8% change -- possible y more than 10% -- unlikely unless you change your learning process (habits) 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Step 3 -- Planned GPA -- Planning z As with all process planning, have

Step 3 -- Planned GPA -- Planning z As with all process planning, have realistic expectations. You will not get an accurate prediction if you give yourself a 100% on each component of the course. y Note that the instructor expects that everybody will do well on each laboratory (mark of A/A-) but does not expect that every student will complete every component of every laboratory -average mark around 80%. y Getting greater than 85% on ENCM 515 quizzes on a regular basis is unlikely. I mark hard and take that into account by giving an A for 85% z Once completed, this web page of your predictions for each course component remains unchanged for the rest of the term. 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Remember! z. Print out a copy of your prediction for your records z. Save the. xls file as you will need it five times during the term z. Don’t change EXPECTED or PLANNED pages after this point as you have made a prediction against which you can then track z. If you want to make a NEW PLAN then move marks over to WHAT-IF 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith -- smithmr@ucalgary, ca 14

Later in the term z Want to track how well you are actually doing

Later in the term z Want to track how well you are actually doing compared to you plan z 5% between actual and planned GPA on an individual course activity -- means nothing in terms of final GPA z After each quiz y. Update the marks you know (earlier labs and quizzes) y. Estimate the marks you don’t know (current labs and quizzes) y. Don’t change things you have not yet done (future labs and quizzes) 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Smith -- smithmr@ucalgary, ca 15

Marks for accurate performance of this activity. y. Easy marks if you take the task seriously z Useful as a review process which is why I allocate marks for the analysis z You may have said -- I would have got more marks if I had time to check things -- Here is the time to get those marks 12/17/2021 ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis -- Planning and Tracking Copyright M. Step 5 -- Marks for quiz analysis z Predict the mark you expect to

Step 5 -- Marks for quiz analysis z Predict the mark you expect to obtain for each question and the overall exam. y Submit via a web-form y Accuracy expected +- 10%. y Marks you receive for this evaluation is determined entirely by the accuracy of your prediction. y REMEMBER -- more than one answer typically possible -- think about whether you have an “alternative answer” or else you’ll lose prediction marks. z Use this information to update your ACTUAL predicted web page. y Modify the spreadsheet to reflect any marks received for previous quizzes and laboratories. y If a mark has not been returned -- provide a reasonable estimate -- after all you know how much of the lab you completed -- Marks will be lost --for notand providing estimates ENCM 515 -- Earned Mark Analysis Planning Tracking 12/17/2021 Copyright M.
