Learning for everyone… What do we mean by Equality, Diversity and Inclusion? Ø Equality: Everybody experiences the same opportunities as he next person. Ø Diversity: The differences between individuals and groups in society Ø Inclusion: A process of identifying, understanding and breaking down barriers to participation.
Learning for everyone… The effects of discrimination What is discrimination? “Treating someone less or more favourably than other people because they or their family belong to a particular group in society” Ø Ø Ø Loss of self esteem and confidence Lack of self worth Exclusion Denied chances to fulfil potential Hinder motivation to learn and succeed.
Learning for everyone… Legislation I would like you to research the following acts and explain how they relate to your own practice: Ø Equality Act 2010 Ø United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989 Ø The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2002 Ø The Special Educational Needs & Disability Act 2001 Ø Children's Act 1989 and 2004 Ø Your own organisation’s equality and inclusion policy
Learning for everyone… How to challenge discrimination Ø Never ignore discriminatory behaviour. Ø Never feel you will make things worse by addressing the issue. Ø Intervene immediately Ø Give correct information if necessary Ø Help the person learn from the situation Ø Support the person who has been the victim of discrimination.
