Early Pregnancy Assessment Units (EPAU) Referral Criteria and Process September 2020

EPAU Referral Process for GP’s Patient attends GP Appointment scheduled EPAU assess referral Email GP completes referral form and emails to EPAU Inappropriate referrals will be returned to GP Clinically unstable women should NOT be referred to EPAU Key Points • The EPAU sites will be accepting referrals by email only • Patients will be seen by appointments only- there is no walk-in service EPAU offers telephone triage to patient Some patients may only require a telephone consultation.

Referral Criteria • Women up to 16+6 weeks gestation (Basildon <13+6) • Recurrent miscarriage (more than 3) • Previous ectopic • Pregnant women with pain and or moderate/heavy bleeding • Hyperstimulation • Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (hyperemesis) Southend University Hospital: for hyperemesis please refer pregnant women to MB 1 Ward 01702385301 not EPAU services Treatments Offered Where medically appropriate we offer a range of options for conditions in early pregnancy. • Expectant, medical and surgical management of miscarriage • Management of ectopic pregnancy: medical, surgical and close monitoring with expectant management • PUL, Pregnancy of Unknown Location • Inpatient and outpatient management of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy
