Impressionist Movement • Began in Paris • Artists recorded the leisure activities of Parisians ( concerts, cafes, picnics, beach parties etc. ) • Backdrop was Paris as it had been under Napoleon III (1852 - 1870)

Post- impressionism • Continuation of Impressionism not a reaction against it • These artists wanted to join impressionism to earlier artistic traditions • More importance is placed on form and structure
