English attack on St. Augustine, 1586 England attacks Spanish settlements and set up their own settlements in North and South America. Up and down the coast of the Americas, countries are attacking each others settlements.

Show me the $$$$$ England began directing its resources towards establishing colonies. The English government refused to fund the colonies. Private investors invested in colonies. Sir Walter Raleigh received permission from Elizabeth to start the first colony at Roanoke Island.

Roanoke Island 1585 This was England’s 1 st attempt to start a colony. 2. The 1 st colony was destroyed when the Natives realized that the English wanted their land they stopped replenishing the English food supply. 3. Colony failed and surviving members of the colony returned to England in 1586. 1. Sir Walter Raleigh starts the first colony at Roanoke Island.

1587 John White, leader of the colony 2. Brought his family to Roanoke. His granddaughter was the first English child (Virginia Dare) born in North America. 3. 1587 - White sails to England to get needed supplies. 1588 Spain attacks England with the Spanish Armada. 1588!! The Spanish Armada King Phillip of Spain ordered 130 Spanish warships to attack England 2. Sea Dogs (pirates who worked for England) and a storm defeated the Armada, the navy sailed back to Spain with less than half of their ships. 3. This defeat had two important consequences: 1. England would remain independent and could continue colonizing. 2. Spain could be defeated…this led other countries to challenge Spain. 1.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. King James I issued a charter in 1606 to set up a colony that he hoped would make money for England. This is called an economic reason for setting up a colony. Jamestown was the first permanent English Colony. They named the colony Jamestown in honor of King James I. First successful colony for England. The colonists immediately ran into trouble. 1608 John Smith 1. By 1608 only 38 2. 3. 4. Pocahontas saving John Smith 5. colonist were still alive in Jamestown. John Smith took over the colony. He announced that, “He that will not work shall not eat. ” He persuaded the Powhatan tribe to trade for corn. The colony survived.

Tobacco 1612 1. John Rolfe developed a high quality tobacco plant that became the cash crop for Jamestown. 2. Tobacco could be sold for a lot of money in England. Cash Crop=crops you grow to sell.

Tobacco 1. The Virginia Company found that the people would work harder if they were allowed to keep some of the profit from the sale of the tobacco. 2. Jamestown was the start of the FREE ENTERPRISE system in North America. 3. Cash Crops helped Jamestown survive. Free Enterprise= people are free to own their own businesses and keep most of the money they make with their business. The government is limited on what it can take from the owner.

1619 Slave=a person who is the property of another person. 1. Slaves arrive to provide an inexpensive labor force. 2. They were brought to America to harvest tobacco for English plantation owners. 3. This is the beginning of slavery in America.

Colonist set up their own government because they became annoyed with the strict rule of the governor. 2. Local Control. Representatives were elected by the people of the colony. Assembly could meet once a year. 3. The House of Burgesses was the first elected assembly in the American colonies. 1. House of Burgesses 1619

Plymouth Pilgrims (also called Separatists) rejected the Church of England & chose to ‘separate’. 2. Sailed to America on the Mayflower & founded the colony of Plymouth. 3. Indians helped the colony survive by showing them how to grow crops & hunt. 1. 1620
