Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India all formed around rivers. China is no exception. The great Chinese civilizations began to form around the Huang He River.

Huang He River • Stretches east across the northern section of China into the Pacific Ocean • As it travels, it collects rich, yellow soil called loess. This gives the river a “yellow” look. • Huang He River is also called the Yellow River because of this.

Chiang Jiang River Valley • People eventually started to move south to the Chang Jiang River valley. • The Chang Jiang is also called the Yangtze River
