SECTION 2 – PARTISAN POLITICS • Jay’s Treaty • Britain persuades Native Tribes to attack American settlers in the West • John Jay sent to Britain to persuade Britain to stop • Agreements 1. Britain had right to stop ships going to France 2. No compensation for already seized goods 3. British give up Forts still in use 4. MOST-FAVORED NATION status • Federalists accused of being pro-British, but Washington implements it

SECTION 2 – PARTISAN POLITICS • Election of 1800 • Adams wants to win but… • Sedition Act & higher taxes very unpopular • Adams also angered his own party (Federalist) • Federalists worked to undermine Adams • Jefferson defeated Adams • Exposed a flaw – people do not elect president directly • Jefferson wins based on compromise
